David Stredder interviews Peter Pereira Gray, Managing Partner and CEO, Investment Division of Wellcome Trust

Peter Pereira Gray is Managing Partner and Chief Executive Officer of the Investment Division of the Wellcome Trust, where he has worked for over 20 years. Wellcome has a gross investment portfolio of some $50 billion, and has achieved a net investment return of 14.2 % p.a. since October 1985.

Peter is Chairman of Premier Marinas, the UK’s leading marina owner and operator and chairman of Urban and Civic plc the UK’s master planner and developer.  Peter was a main board director of iQ, one of the largest privately owned student housing owner operators in the UK, sold to Blackstone in May 2020.

Peter is the immediate past co-chair of the Institutional Investors Roundtable, a not for profit organisation funded by government, philanthropy and global institutions speaking for over $15 trillion of investment assets.

Richard Aston is a Japanese equities Portfolio Manager at Coupland Cardiff Asset Management LLP and works closely with Jonathan Dobson, CIO – Japan.

Richard graduated from Cambridge University with an MA in Engineering and a sponsorship from GEC Industrial Controls.  He first moved into the finance industry as an Investment Analyst with Sun Life Asset Management (now part of AXA Investment Managers) in 1992.

After various roles within the asset management team, Richard was appointed as a Portfolio Manager on the Japanese desk in 1997. In 2000, he was appointed Head of Japanese equities at Chase Asset Management in London.

Following the merger of Chase Manhattan, Flemings and JPMorgan, Richard became a member of the JPMorgan Asset Management Japanese Equities team based in London and subsequently in Tokyo, where he worked closely with Jonathan Dobson.

He was promoted to Managing Director in 2008. In December 2010, Richard returned to London and joined Coupland Cardiff Asset Management LLP.

David Stredder interviews Sheryl Cuisia, our new Chair at ShareSoc

Sheryl Cuisia,

ShareSoc Chair, Sheryl Cuisia draws on over 20 years’ experience in investor engagement and corporate governance advisory, during which time she has overseen 1,000 campaigns across multiple industries and markets. With progressive proxy solicitation and shareholder communications for complex mergers and acquisitions, activist situations and corporate actions being her key focus areas, she is able to apply her specialist insights to her work at ShareSoc.

In 2011, Sheryl founded a leading UK shareholder engagement consultancy, which was subsequently acquired by a FTSE 250 company in 2018. Her cadre of clients include small-cap companies through to large multi-nationals, activist hedge funds and private equity firms. Her substantial career spans analytical, operational and developmental roles in the UK and Canada for corporate advisory firms.

Sheryl’s advocacy work includes her role as the inaugural Entrepreneur-in-Residence at King’s College, Cambridge University, and co-founding and co-chairing the Women’s Company Secretary Circle (WoCoS). She is also a member of the judging panel of the Non-Executive Director Awards, and holds a small portfolio of non-executive director mandates.

Tom Williams, Partner and Head of Energy and Infrastructure

Tom joined Downing as Partner in the Energy & Infrastructure team in July 2018. He heads up the team and has 20 years’ of experience as Principal and Adviser across the private equity and private debt infrastructure sectors. He trained as a Solicitor before moving into private equity, where he carried out successful transactions totalling in excess of £13 billion in the energy, utilities, transportation, accommodation and defence sectors. Tom holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Legal Practice from the Royal College of Law and both a master’s and bachelor’s degree in law from Cambridge University.

Henrik Dahlstrom, Investment Director

Henrik joined Downing in August 2020 as Investment Director in the Energy & Infrastructure division, where he leads investments in the Nordic region, an area which he has specialised in for nearly two decades.

Previous to his Downing appointment, Henrik undertook a 17-year tenure at Macquarie as a Director with Macquarie Infrastructure and Real Assets (MIRA) and was made Head of Nordic Region in 2015. Since 2004, Dahlström has been involved in all six of Macquarie’s diversified European infrastructure funds (Macquarie European Infrastructure Funds, MEIF).

Henrik holds a Master of Science and Major in Finance from Gothenburg School of Economic, Sweden being where he grew up.

Tom Moore, Partner and Head of Asset Management

Tom Moore joined Downing in May 2019 and is a Partner and Head of Asset Management. Tom is building our asset management functionality to provide our investors with an efficient and class leading management service. Prior to joining Downing, Tom was Director at Foresight Group, where he had oversight of a significant portfolio of renewable energy investments.

Craig has been involved in Vietnam for over 27 years. In 2005 he moved to Vietnam as an investment director and Head of Private Equity for Prudential Vietnam (now Eastspring), and led several notable investments. Prior to Prudential, Craig was a founding team member of Standard Chartered Private Equity, and in the 1990s ran a management consulting firm across Indochina. From 2010 to 2018 he was a managing partner and co-CEO of CapAsia, a Singapore licenced private equity fund manager, focusing on investments across Asia’s emerging markets.

Craig joined with Vu Quang Thinh in early 2018 to co-lead the establishment of Dynam Capital.

Craig has a Masters degree in Engineering from the University of York, UK, and a MBA with Distinction from INSEAD, and is a member of the Singapore Institute of Directors.

Steve Hunter

I have been analysing and writing about financial markets for some four decades, initially as a business journalist on The TimesThe Economist and The Independent, more recently as an independent investment professional and author/columnist/publisher.
